Fan of The Sports Guy

July 8, 2009

Hello out there in CyberSpace!

My name is Jordan, I am 23 years old and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.   I am a diehard sports fan and The Sports Guy, Bill Simmons is someone that I highly respect.   I know he’s  overwhelmingly popular today, but backtrack over a decade ago when I knew that he needed to be HUGE for the voice of the fan to be truly recognized in the media.  Over the last decade I have seen the rise and fall of players and leagues alike and he has been there to comment about it.   Him and I have very similar sensibilities in terms of the sports we follow and study religiously.  Both him and I are NBA, MLB/NFL (interchangeable based on season),  College Basketball, NHL, College Football,  TENNIS, POKER, BOXING, PGA, UFC and Horse Racing Sports Guys in that order.   That does not even include Fantasy Sports but they’ll be plenty of words for that in the future.   After reading an article that Simmons wrote in 1998 comparing current NBA players to characters from Rounders (one of my all time favorite movies), I was hooked.  I met Bill at a book signing for his book about the Red Sox Championship at a Borders in NYC three years ago and in front of a room filled with people, we talked about Chris Kaman and the future of the Clippers.  Thankfully that future included taking Zach Randolph out of my life.

Brandon and I are tight as can be and we hold our sports knowledge in a high regard.  We hope that you enjoy our perspectives.  Brandon is in NY/FL and I am in L.A., so by reading this blog, you will be getting the blog with the most coast to coast, boast.   I hope that since I live in the same city as Bill Simmons, that we can talk sports in person, but lets see if I have the chops first.  It was strange, listening to a podcast of his today in which he talked about my favorite baseball team, The New York Mets.  It was really strange to listen to.  Like I said, I’ve been reading his work for over a decade and other then the Clemens/Piazza Looney Tunes episode, I could not recall him even mentioning my team.  He compared The Mets to The Red Sox and their fans of old.  How we now expect bad things to happen.  Can you blame us though?  4 of our top players got put on the shelf, when they were about to hit their stride (Delgado, Reyes, Beltran and Putz) and we used to employ Aaron Heilman.  It’s been an ugly year sports wise for me all around, so I’ve come to expect it.  Cheering for the Mets, Knicks and Jets in the same calendar year has given me a grey hair or two but being a sports fan is a roller coaster… whether your a fan of the climbs, the falls or the loop-de-loops, at least you’re on for the ride sports fan!

Brandon and I are here to stay and we hope that you like what we have to say!

Your Blogging Brother,

P.S.  I hope that by 2010 I will be known to enough of you fine folks out there to have a NBA Draft Pod Cast with Mr. Simmons himself.  Some call me the Draft Guru of past and present.  My thoughts on the 2009 NBA Draft to come soon.
